Where can I camp in Colorado Near Estes Park?

munkkey

I live near Denver so anywhere west of there no farther than an hour and a half. I want to go camping but not at an expensive campground, I want to go to a state park or something I'm just not sure where to go and which places allow what. We just want to pitch a tent and have a campfire in the mountains.

= Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park of Estes is the gateway to the town of Estes Park and the spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park. Our resort offers 35 acres of hillside CAMPING and CABINS overlooking a beautiful mountain meadow that is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Roosevelt National Forest.

I'm going trunk camping. I need a place to do it...?

Where's some place near Denver where me and my friend can go park our big ass truck and look @ the stars all night.
AKA we need a dark, unpopulated place where cops won't fuss @ us and we can drink and sleep in here trunk in-in between Denver and Colorado Springs. Help please!

Answer
There are several national parks, national forests, and state forests where you can get a campsite for anywhere from free to $35 per night. Many locations in the mountains will already be closed this time of year due to snow. I'd suggest sticking with national forests, as the opportunity for more secluded campsites (including dispersed camping) seems more in-line with your desires. Except for backcountry sites, where no motor vehicles are permitted, they don't care if you sleep in a tent, vehicle or trunk (although the latter might be a bit cramped :-) ).

Alcohol is another story. Consumption of alcohol is prohibited in federal and most state forests and parks without a permit. Permits are usually only granted to large groups with large insurance policies. However, the presence of un-opened (e.g., seals intact) containers of alcohol are tolerated. I'm not encouraging you to break the law, but if you are discreet and careful to hide the evidence, you might be ok having a few beers or cocktails. But if you plan on sitting around and getting drunk every night you'll probably get caught at some point.

I suggest you check out the USDA website and figure out which areas are still open this late in the year, pick some likely locations and then make some calls to see if early season snow has caused unscheduled closures.
