Whocares
Hi I plan on backcountry camping this upcoming week starting at the trail head by the Bear Mountain Inn, eventually going to the Appalachian trail. I am doing this solo. I am trying to find all the regulations and rules about the state park but can't. Are you allowed to make a fire if you aren't using the state's campsites? I plan on just setting up my tent somewhere nice and just making a fire and cooking some food. Also, any other advice how to avoid problems would be great. Thanks
Answer
The general rule for camping in Harriman/Bear Mountain is at or within 300 feet of a shelter. Bear Mountain has only one, The West Mountain Shelter, which is really nice, good views of the Hudson and NYC skyline, but can be busy on the weekends. It's not on the AT but right ff it on the Timb - Torn (blue) trail, just SE off the AT. If you continue to Harriman State park in just a mile or three, there are more shelters and way more better stealth camping spots (not legal, but out of the way, not disrupting nature to much, leave no trace, I've done it many many times there and never had a problem). Get the NYNJTC Harriman/Bear Mountain map set. You can find a lot of great hikes besides the AT. I've camped in just about every area there without an issue.
You can also catch the AT right off of Seven Lakes Drive in Bear Mountain, which personally, I find a better place to start/park.
Happy Trails....

do soldiers "camp" in real life?
Zack
not camp as in where you get a tent and sleep, camp as in where you sit in a corner of a room, or in some hidden place, wait for a bad guy to run right next to you without seeing you, then shooting him (which is what noobs do in call of duty).
do soldiers do that in real lfe?
Answer
Well, as I know they do in another way. They sit behind walls waiting for the best time etc. But you are talking about the Call of Duty camping, and no, the units and soldiers keeps moving when they can, by sitting in a corner they are a sitting duck. When a area is secure, move with caution. When its not, sneak past, or use stealth to take them out.
