How can we get power to a tent?

Felicia Da

It will be on our property. Is there a way to hook it up to our actual power box that's outside on the pole? Are you able to do that? What about using a generator? What's the cheapest way to do it? But also the safest to prevent a fire? I found this on amazon for about $100: Power Bright VC3000W Voltage Transformer 3000 Watt Step Up/Down converter 110/120 Volt - 220/240 Volt

Would this be the right thing to use? Thanks guys!!

Answer
Run an AC extension cable from one of the AC outlets from your house to the tent. But make sure it is waterproofed. Check with an electrician.

Otherwise for outside use and using an independant power source, you can use a rechargeable DC battery with either a solar panel or hand crank electricity generator to generate and store power. The battery can run a battery charger to power up re-chargeable batteries e.g. AA, AAA sizes, or run off to an inverter (DC to AC converter), to power AC plug appliances.

You can find plenty of solar panel devices, that are advertised to charge cell/mobile phones for cheap. They are usually advertised to have an output of 6-volts. Hand crank generators can be expensive from military surplus to the dedicated K-TOR pocket socket (hand and foot pump generated) or a cheap hand crank radio/flashlight. With the military surplus and radio/flashlight hand crank, you might need to buy some adapters to fit any power inputs that you require, which are cheap anyway. A DC portable battery built for camping/hiking use including an inverter are a little expensive, but worth it in an outdoor scenario where you are miles away from the AC grid. Goal-To-Zero products are popular and sell all these devices as a package (minus hand crank dynamo generator), check the Nomad product range.

If you are really pioneering, you could build yourself a Tesla radiant energy power generator! Obtain zero point energy from nothing e.g. scalar waves. Or build yourself a mechanical perpetual energy generator e.g. check out overunity devices. One example is to use a dynamo generator propelled by a spinning disk using the repulsion of neodynium magnets, if you can visualise that...its simple. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do this.

what is the most portable air conditioning with minimal electricity needed for a camping trip?

I am planning a cross country (us) cycle/backpacking/camping trip for myself and my kids. I hope to set off in early June as soon as school is out. Two of them have autism (one of which is severely involved, the other high functioning) and the third will be two in april. So, i need something extremely lightweight, portable and able to run off nature as much as possible. this is not for a nightly basis but for extreme circumstances when the kids (and myself of course) will need some relief. this adventure will take us throughout the next year + through rugged and extreme conditions from time to time. We will also be cycling, myself and my 10yr-old son will be the only peddlers. My oldest is too severe (disabled) to assist and obviously the 2-yr-old can't help much. so we have to minimize weight as much as possible but have enough supplies to keep us safe and healthy. I am contemplating a 600amp power pack to use for nightly computer logging, occasional heating, occasional cooling (undetermined unit so far), occasional movie watching (dvds on comp), and mp3 and track phone charging. This pack can be hooked to a solar pannel for charging during the days while we ride and the pack weighs about 30lbs (another small child), but it also includes am/fm radio, alarm clock, ac and dc outlets, some models even have air compressors. Obviously we will have the smabeginningpumps due to tire repairs and air matress needs but i thought for 30lbs this includes several items in one and can be charged with solar. it can also be charged with a cord when access to plug is available. The tent we've decided on is rather large (up to 8 peeps) for the 4 of us. We have quite the convoy of family chariot trikes and trailers assembled. I really want to have a cooling device for those exhausting days - which i'm sure we will have many of, especially in the beginning until our bodies adjust. No need to cool the entire tent but an area to create relief. Any advice on cooling and power units that meet these needs would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
What your looking for is called a swamp cooler fan. these type of fans circulate water through the system add mist to the airflow and cool you by evaporation they are boxy and heavy but require only simple voltage and power. A small 1000 watt generator would be more then enough to run one of these.
