Do you need a tent to camp?

EmmieG

Okay, stupid question time. It's a long story but I'm on a somewhat tight budget. I want to bike around the country and I have a big rucksack and a sleeping bag and tinned food and I'm going to the Peak District. Do you think it's possible to just find a spot in the Peak District and just lay my sleeping bag down and sleep there? Or is it too risky?

Answer
I've rolled into my tent rain fly to sleep when fatigue prevented
tent set-up. This and bivy bags get a little clammy as they
don't vent easily. You could buy cheap painting plastic that is
usually spread to protect carpets. Knot all corners to cowgirl
tent. You'll need a hip-high length of nylon cord in a line that
will face windward. Lay a layer to sleep upon. Lift the larger
portion to form the weather protection wall and downward tilt
of roofing. Four stone driven pegs of metal or plastic are cord
tied to draw upon the knotted sheet corners. Lay beside wall
to reduce wind noise. This shelter is for temporary use, tears
easy, but a roll of duct tape is helpful for patching. At worst
you can roll it around your body leaving a tunnel for fresh air.
Yes, I suppose you could be hauled away like an old carpet.

Camping in the loire valley?

carl b

I am planning on packing a tent with me when I do my bike trip through the loire valley. Can I just park on the side of the bike path and pitch a tent without paying anything/permits/etc.?

Answer
In France, legislation on the camping is located between the ban, as in Great Britain, and the desire to leave this open practice in Sweden. Camping is not permanently banned. It is possible to camp on any private land, provided they have received the consent of the owner and part of the public domain provided that there is no ban.

However, it is forbidden to camp on the roads and public places, within 200 m of water points captured for consumption in a listed, registered or protected, within 500 m of historic monument in nature reserves and in areas where the municipality decides by order for reasons of security or safety. Regulatory signs are supposed to be affixed at the entrance to restricted areas.

If you are camping in a prohibited area, you incur up to 1500 ⬠fine.

To practice camping, some usage rules are respected:
> Be respectful of the space in which you are
> Minimize installation: hardware discreet and compact.
> Arrive late, leave early
> Do not sleep in large open places

But you can also find a lot of cheap campsites along the Loire (the cheapest are generally the "municipal" ones... about 3 euros a night...)
