Answer
A camping/fishing destination that I've stayed at near Chicago?

The best fishing/camping experience I've had (relatively close to you) would be at Gunflint Pines Lodge MN near the border of Canada.

Go to http://www.gunflintpines.com/camp_cabins.shtml

Camping cabins are fantastic! They eliminate the hassle of tent and camp set-up, are more secure and comfortable than ANY traditional tent camping, have electric facility's for heaters/electric coolers/hot-plates/ Etc and generally sleep better after a hard day of fishing.

The Gunflint Pines lodge is a GREAT fishing destination where you can catch (literally) 50-100 fish per day! Gunflint Pines is located on the border of Canada and has access to tons of fishing opportunity's because of the many various lakes in the region.

And at $57 a night you can't find a better accommodation, (period!).

Gunflint Lake has great Walleye and Lake trout fishing.

Loon Lake has great Small-mouth Bass and Northern fishing.

Go check it out.

Where is the best campgrounds in Minnesota for using tents and avoiding cabins, rv parking etc...?

I have never been camping before, but would like a campground that is not surrounded with buildings and rv camps. I just want to have a peaceful weekend without having modern technologies around destroying the peace. Any advice on where you have been/heard of that is like this, would be appreciated.

If you go to http://www.exploreminnesota.com/ they have a list of all the campgrounds. Go under lodging and advanced search and you can put in what you want. If you haven't been camping before I wouldn't start in Northern MN although beautiful you have to deal with bears.

The boundry water canoe area is a great place for rustic camping but you should try a few other places first. Most state parks have designated areas for just tents.

We have been to a lot of county parks that have majority tents and a few campers but they don't have cabins. Hill top cabins on Wabedo Lake near Longville was awesome but I don't know if they are in business anymore. There were a few cabins but otherwise rustic. Lake Itaska state park would be a good one.

Hunterville state forest has a very rustic tent only site by the river but there are bears.

Tent only no campers:
Houston Nature Center Camping
Cascade River State Park - Minnesota (218) 387-3053
Grand Portage National Monument - Minnesota (218) 387-2788
