Best place to go tent camping right now?

Ms. W

I live in northern illinois and i'm just tired of the cold weather. I don't have a lot of money but I just need to go somewhere warm. Camping is cheaper than staying at a hotel and I do love nature and away from everyday noise. can someone please give me some input. thanks!

Go tent camping on the beach, if you can make the drive. I took a roadtrip from Iowa to North Carolina with some friends in March years ago and we camped on the beach. It was a campsite on the North Carolina/South Carolina border. I don't remember the name offhand.

I've also camped on Assateague Island in Maryland/Virginia. Another beautiful place. Camping on the beach is great.

If you can't go far, look into somewhere further south. Arkansas has some beautiful outdoor spots. But, really, anywhere south will be fine. It all depends on how far you can go and how much you can spend.

Play around on GORP's website a little and see if you can find a place to escape to: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/main.htm

Real camping in North Carolina?

Me and my boyfriend really want to go REAL camping meaning....either bathing in the lake or not at all (I know gross) using a tent, having to hike a few miles to get to a spot. We want to be away from people .... not a campsite where tons of people would be comping right around us.....If you know any places in North Carolina ... tell me!!!
We are in Wilmington were willing to drive a few hours to go somewhere....the max is probably 5.

I lived in Virginia Beach for a while and we used to go up to Shoe Creek in the George Washington National Forrest. You do need 4WD to get into and out of some of the camping sites and there are 3 or 4 water crossings that you have to ford but it is well worth it. We have been up there on Memorial Day and saw no one, but we were pretty far back in the woods.

Here is a thread that talks has the directions..again you will need 4WD to get back to some of the sites, but some can be done in 2WD as well. Hope that helps and if you don't make it this trip I suggest trying in once, you wont regret it. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f160/shoe-creek-location-848736/

A few videos of the place as well: You don't have to do all of these obsticales, they are just fun to do..if you can
