Small campgrounds for tent camping in MD, DE, VA, WV, or PA?

Lepke

Does anyone know of any small campgrounds (I realize that "small" is relative) in the abovementioned states. We had a great time at Burton Island in Vermont, and would love to find a small campground (either state park or national park or private) that's not too crowded and the tent sites are relatively private. I am looking for personal experience, since I know about the websites and books that rate campgrounds. Thanks for the help.

Answer
Try Elk Neck State Park in Cecil County Maryland. I was raised about 10 miles away and it is an excellent small site, for camping, fishing, hiking, whatever. Wonderful!! I know youll love it!!

Anyone know any interesting camping sites in VA or NC?

Hmmm I've been to over 2/3 of the NC state parks so I know them better (I usually camp in a tent as well). For novice campers at the beach-I liked NC Carolina Beach State Park-but I like quiet parks with a marina and hiking trails:

In the mtns/piedmont-in NC I liked Hanging Rock State Park or Stone Mountain State Park (Stone Mtn is by the Blue Ridge Parkway so if it's campground is full you can find a spot at one of the Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds-another good choice as well). At Hanging Rock you can camp and swim or hike or boat or rock climb-at Stone Mountain you can camp and hike or fish or rock climb :

Stone: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/stmo/main.php
Blue Ridge Parkway: http://www.nps.gov/blri/

If you like the beach-I liked First Landing State park at a Virginia State Park where I stayed in a cabin for once-it had camping and swimming or hiking or biking or fishing and you could boat if you rented one in Virginia Beach:

If you prefer the VA mtns-I've camped at Shenandoah National Park as well and it was very beautiful-but I went off-season - not in the summer:

All NC State Parks: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/main.php
All VA State Parks: http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/state_park.shtml

NC State Parks allow dogs as long as you keep them on a leash-I'd check on VA and the Nat'l parks-they're probably the same but I haven't checked in a while...
