Is tent camping a good family vacation?

Liviyaya

My family really wants to try it. What should I bring other than a positive attitude? What would I cook for meals for my kids?

Answer
It depends on the family. If your into the outdoors yeah it can be a great time. But it's not for everybody. A few friends and I took their daughters camping 3 of them had a fun time. But the other was upset because she couldn't get cellphone signal or that she was going to miss out what was happening at their local mall.

What to cook is hard to say. You know your kids better than us. We don't know if their finicky eaters so I would suggest cook their favorite food & they should be happy. To get some cooking ideas check out this Boy Scouts site.

As for things to bring your list can very. You will have your tent, sleeping bags, air matresses, latterns, cooking gear, etc. But there are always the little things you might forget. To save time I keep all of my gear in rubbermade totes. I have a few for different things.

One is my cooking/kitchen items. This will contain my utensils, pans, coffee pot, paper plates, etc.

Another tote is my tent stuff. This contains my groundcloth, tent air mattresses & stakes.

The final tote is what I call my general tote. This has the other items like matches, bug spray, first aid kit, extra rope, batteries, rain gear, etc.

One thing I would suggest is bring something for everybody to do. One thing I carry with is a 7 in 1 magnetic travel game set. It's small and takes up hardly any space. Another thing that is real popular at the campsites I go to is called ladderball. It a game you make out of PVC tubing, golf balls and rope. Here's a link on how to play and make the game.

Have a great time enjoy the great outdoors.

Why don't many black people go tent camping?

Mike L

I don't mean to sound stereotypical or that I am just making a generalization here, but I've spoken with a lot of my black co-workers about having a fun little camping trip during the summer, but none of them are interested. In fact, most of them appall tent camping. Is there any reason for this?
K, I don't know how to write in the language your screen name is... but I don't really think I fit that post at all. I have several 'black' friends that I work with, and I have posed this question to them, but they could not answer it for me. I posted it on here because I can reach more people that may have a legitimate reason that this happens. I've been tent camping on many occasions and have not seen many, if any, black people doing it. I don't knit pick them, or put them down for this, but I wonder if there is a cultural difference that would account for this. I recognize many similarities between all races, but before we can recognize those, we should understand the differences, too.
Generally, when I don't want to do something, I have a reason for it.

Answer
People are usually introduced to camping by their parents. it is a passion that is passed from generation to generation. I suspect that in the bad old days when camping was done in conjunction with hunting and racism was rampant, that black parents were reluctant to take their families into woods full white folks with guns. Thus several generations of blacks were never exposed to camping.

Fortunately attitudes change and many more minorities are discovering the joy of camping. Being a food lover, I love to walk through a well Integrated campground in late afternoon and smell the dinners from so many different cultures that people are preparing, and exchange recipes with other campers.
