how to get smell off camping tents?

Q.

Answer
Sometimes, depending on the age, type, and usage of the tent, the smell just won't come out. Here is the method I used in my tent camping days.

As soon as possible after returning from your camping trip, set your tent up again in your yard. The sooner the better. Many people returning from camping are tired, and postpone setting up the tent for airing a day or two. This allows any mold or mildew to grow, and musty odors to increase. Of course, if you return home and the weather does not allow for this, you have no choice but to wait.

Set up your tent just as if you were camping. Stretch it out fairly tightly, opening all window and door flaps and tying them back. I used a disinfectant spray, such as Lysol spray to deodorize the tent as soon as it has been set up to air. Spray it well, inside and out with disinfectant spray. Then simply let it set up for a few hours. After a few hours pass, untie and unroll your window flaps, and spray those too. Keep the window flaps partially zipped or loosely tied so that these can get fresh air, too. Let the tent sit awhile with window and door flaps closed or partially closed to air the flaps.

If the weather is nice, you may want to leave the tent up for a 2nd day. Reopen the door and window flaps as before, and let the entire thing air. You may want to spray a 2nd round of Lysol, depending on how bad the smell. Don't forget to spray and air the tent bag, too. You can tie the tent bag to one of the poles to air it, or hang it from a tree branch. After a few hours of airing, turn the bag inside out and air it some more.

I wouldn't leave a canvas or nylon tent sitting in the sun, unused for more than 2 or 3 days, as the sun can deteriorate the tent fabric over time.

Good luck and happy camping.

what are some good quality camping tents

Answer
The best are made by a company called The North Face, but can be quite expensive. We camp all the time, and have a Coleman family tent, an Ozark Trail tent (from Wal-mart, I think made by Coleman), and an REI back-packer's 2-man tent. If you have any sporting goods store nearby (Bass Pro Shop has an excellent assortment), go in and talk to a sales person. Keep in mind that the size of the tent (how many people it sleeps) is a very crowded fit. For 4 people to be comfy, with duffelbags inside, you really need an 8-person tent. Keep in mind, too, seasonality, the type of material the floor is made of (you don't want it to tear if you have to put it up on a gravel or rocky area), and weight.
