Tent Buying: Under $100?

Vicky C

Hi, I'm looking into buying a tent and was wondering if anyone would know one that would fit my needs.

I'm spending 5 weeks camping in Alaska. It'll be coldest 30 degrees. I need a small tent that'll fit me and my hiking backpack, so maybe a two person tent. It needs to hold up to rain and be durable enough to last for the full 5 weeks.

My maximum price is $100, but I'm ideally looking for something around $60.
Has anyone bought a tent that might fit these needs? If it's over that price, please answer anyway, I might be able to find it cheaper on ebay or something.

Thanks!

Answer
You are going to enjoy at least 5 x 6 = 30 nights in your tent shelter. Therefore, I recommend that you spend $10 for each night on your shelter. Although you did not mention whether you will be backpacking, where weight is a significant factor, you should purchase a high-quality tent that will last your lifetime. I live in the wilderness in all kinds of conditions in the MSR Hubba Hubba, $300. The tent has light, rugged, waterproof materials. The poles leap together for quick set-up. It functions well in high winds on tundra grasslands as well as under rainstorms and snow. The space is adequate for two people with gear. Other manufacturers produce a similar tent in the price range. REI Half Dome 2 Plus Tent, $200. Marmot Limelight 2 Tent, $200. Kelty Salida 2 Tent, $160.

Is this a good tent for camping?

Has anyone had any experience with this tent?
How does it hold up? and also, what are the dimensions of the smaller rooms? Would I be able to fit a queen sized airbed in one of them?

How about this tent? http://www.target.com/Coleman-Family-Dome-Tent/dp/B0006U9PB4/ref=sc_ri_3?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=1KRANA7WBVV0SN6KYJQ5&pf_rd_p=465348991&pf_rd_i=B000W4O8JI&pf_rd_s=bottom-11&pf_rd_m=A1VC38T7YXB528&pf_rd_t=201 Coleman Family Dome Tent

We want one big tent, not several smaller tents.

Answer
The first one gives dimensions and 10 by 18 should be plenty of room for your mattress. They are both decent tents but not top of the line. Coleman products have always been reputable. It is also plenty large for a mattress. One is square and one is more rectangular, so that might be the biggest thing to consider for sleeping arrangements.
