Small campgrounds for tent camping in MD, DE, VA, WV, or PA?

Lepke

Does anyone know of any small campgrounds (I realize that "small" is relative) in the abovementioned states. We had a great time at Burton Island in Vermont, and would love to find a small campground (either state park or national park or private) that's not too crowded and the tent sites are relatively private. I am looking for personal experience, since I know about the websites and books that rate campgrounds. Thanks for the help.

Answer
Try Elk Neck State Park in Cecil County Maryland. I was raised about 10 miles away and it is an excellent small site, for camping, fishing, hiking, whatever. Wonderful!! I know youll love it!!

tent camping south PA and MD?

whoknowswh

Hi, I am planning a small roadtrip with my friend from Mid NJ to south PA/MD . We are not going too far or planning too much, But i did want to plan where we will be camping ( as it is cheaper than a hotel and way more fun) I wanted to know if anyone has ever camped at the following locations or if they have any suggestions of great places to do primitive camping. no toilets or showers or water or electric needed. And we are williing to hike a small amount to get to the site (1-4 miles?). And preferably a place that does not need reservations (as its not exactly plannable)
1) Fowler's Hallow in PA
2) Poe Paddy
3) Reed's Gap
4) Penn- Roosevelt (PS- 2, 3,4 are very close so im trying to figure out which one is best)
5) Green Mountain State Forest: Flinstone, MD

Even if you have experience at one of these, THANK YOU :)

Folwler's Hollow is tiny, only 100 acres. You could hike along the Tuscarora Trail that passes through it to find a campsite but you will not get far from other people in the park itself. Poe Paddy and Reeds Gap are also small (250 acres or less). Penn Roosevelt is even smaller -- in fact at 41 acres it is not much bigger than the average mall parking lot. None of these parks are large enough for you to get away from other campers within the boundaries. None of them is even a mile wide. I have picnicked in a couple of these parks and stayed overnight at Reeds Gap, but they are not even big enough for a day hike.

Do you mean Green Ridge State Forest? I don't know of any Green Mountain forest in Maryland. That is really the only one of the locations that you list where you could find a secluded primitive site (they list 100 of them.) At 45,000 acres plus it does have trails through it but only one, the Great Eastern, is longer than 10 miles, so you are going to get a lot of day hikers there.

Depending on when you plan the trip you may have trouble finding a site in Green Ridge. It is so near large population areas that it can be very heavily used in peak summer months like late June, July and August. Campsites require registration but they don't accept reservations -- it is first come, first served. There are campsites along the C & O canal which you can hike to -- it is iin the same area. You can spot them as little red tents on this map of Green Ridge. The canal trail is very cool Check out the tunnel it passes through near Paw Paw if you get a chance. Great mountain bike trip.

I suggest you pick up the PA DCNR map that has information on all the parks and camping areas. Maryland should have something similar.

YOu can also camp along the portion of the Appalachian Trail that cuts through Michaux State Forest at Caledonia State Park on route 30 west of Gettysburg. That's a nice campground at Caledonia but it may be more "civilzed" than you want.
