Private camping in pennsylvania?

Mike

I pretty much dont want to see another camper 20' away. Or a bunch of tents in an open field. I want to camp in the woods lol.. Any suggestions?

Answer
You can legally camp on almost any area of state forest land if you are only going one night at a time. If you plan on going for longer, I would suggest designated camping areas during more undesirable times of the year like now. It's going to be cold the next few days. Possibly a big snow for us too.

Again? lol

Pennsylvania camping questions?

Q. I would like to go camping at Jellystone Park (Yogi Bear). What are some pros and cons about this place? What do you like about it and what don't you like about it?

Answer
It's not what I would call camping. Those commericial chain campgrounds are like setting up your tent in a Walmart parking lot. No privacy, but lots of congestion and noise and little in the way of wilderness. Why don't you camp in the State Parks and National Forest campgrounds instead? Caledonia State Park on Route 30 in south central PA, just west of Gettysburg, is a really nice campground with shower and bath houses and pretty secluded campsites. There are nice areas to hike in there, a lake up the road with a swimming beach and trails in the adjacent Michaux State Forest. The Appalachian Trail even goes through there. Another lovely camping area is Yellow Creek Park, near Indiana, PA, with a beautiful large lake, shady campsites and hiking trails full of wildflowers.

Look at the Pennsylvania State DCNR website and you will find all kinds of state-run campgrounds, even some with cabins or yurts to rent, all over the state. Cooks Forest is one that comes to mind, but there are many others.

If you insist on going to a commercial campground, buy a Rand McNally campground guide and pick a nice privately owned one, not a chain like KOA or Jellystone.
