Going camping in the Smoky Mountains. Advice?

Andrea

When my group leaves the campsite, should we tie up everything (even our tent)? I know all our belongings should be put up on the bear cables but I'm not sure if we need to take our tent apart and hang that up too. And what if we have to go poop... Sorry, haha! But I'm serious! I don't know what the proper procedure for that is when we have no bathrooms and there are other campers around. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated (as far as food, clothing, shelter, hygiene, etc.). We're all beginners that have never been camping outside of our state. Thank you!

Answer
If you are staying at a campground leaving your tent up and the doors closed is adequate. In general folks leave other folks stuff alone. Same in the back country even if it is at a hike in camp site.

Always use a bear proof food canister and hang up your food and other smelly items or use the campground lockers never leave food or cook in your tent or your car.

Bring a small hand shovel and toilet paper find a nice tree to hide behind and squat to do your business. Baby wipes will be good to have as well.

Bring food you like so that you will eat it. Go to your local grocer and look in the easy prep rows there are hundreds of choices where you just add water boil and eat, as well as pre cooked meats like tuna, salmon, chicken, beef sausages the options are huge for quick and simple meals.

Hyginene is as simple as jumping in a lake or stream however folks drink that water down stream so if you need a bath bring a collapsible bucket and wash-up 200 feet away from the water source. Use a biodegradable soap

Make sure you have a campsite waiting for you. Often popular destinations get booked up six months in advance and permits may be required for wilderness access. Get your permits from the ranger stations in the forests area's you plan to visit and make reservations here,

Where to camp Smoky Mountains?

nutaskeet

I am looking to camp in the Smoky Mountains. I am tent camping. I would love to do a backcounty camp, but wont have a lot of time for long hikes to get there and cannot find anywhere that lets me know parking areas and distances to sites. I don't mind camping at a park of some sort, but I don't want to be right next to another tent. Anyone know of any good places? Ideal would be somewhere where the tent sites are spaced out with plenty of privacy...like being in backcountry, only not... Any suggestions?

Answer
The Cosby Area doesn't get a whole lot of people and it's also one of the prettiest parts in my opinion. There are backcountry sites #34, #35, and #29. You can pick up a free permit at any rangers station in the park.
