Fun activities for camping?

Paige

My family just bought a cabin in the mountains. We will be going there in a week for the first time and staying there for two weeks. It will be my mom, dad, brother, sister, and I.

I am 14, my sister is 16, and my brother is 13. There is a lake that we have access to, so we will be swimming. We can't go tubing though because it isn't allowed on this lake because of safety reasons :P. My brother is scared of boats, so we wouldn't be able to do that anyway. There is a fire pit that we will be roasting mountain pies, hot dogs, and s'mores by at night.

We can tell stories and stuff by the fire. We can swim in the lake. We can hike. We'll be bringing cards and a few board games in case it rains. That's pretty much all I have. My parents pretty much want it a natural vacation because they want us to experience what camping is somewhat like. And my mother HATES sleeping in tents and assumes we wouldn't like it either, so no tents for us.

I guess what I'm asking is what can I do with my family in woodsy areas to keep myself from getting bored? Maybe hide-and-go-seek in the woods? I don't know... help please!!??

Answer
You are not camping if there is no tent. You should find out if your family would let you get a tent, maybe 5 x 7, with a queen-size air mattress. Then, you will be more comfortable than sleeping on the ground and can get cheaper equipment than backpacking gear. You can get a tent, cheap sleeping bag, air mattress, and air pump for about $100 total. You could hike a little and set-up a campsite, dig a pit for a little leave-no-trace fire and cover it when you are done. You can also study some camping food recipes and experiment. For recreation, take a Frisbee, soccer ball, hackey-sack. You can find camping game ideas if you will do a search on the internet.

Help... What to do when camping overnight?

Me and my sister are camping in our back garden (In a 4 man tent), and neither of us know what to do or what to have for snacks... Any ideas?

Answer
Time with your sister? What's not to love?

Half the fun of "camping" in the backyard is being on your own, so try to plan ahead and everything you need so you won't have to go back inside except to go to the bathroom.

Are you able to build a campfire (even a small one in a charcoal grill will do) to make popcorn and roast marshmallows? It also gives you a place to talk and sing at night.

You can also bring any kind of snacks that don't require refrigeration. I suggest that you plan on spending some time before you head out to the backyard making some homemade snacks. It will be fun, and will give you some more quality time together. The box of rice krispies will have a recipe for rice krispie snacks, and a box of Chex cereal will have a recipe for trail mix. Baking a batch of cookies from scratch could be good, too! If you don't have a fire, make some popcorn inside beforehand. In addition to the starchy and sugary snacks, make sure to bring something with protein, such as nuts, beef jerky, summer sausage, cheese or peanut butter. This will keep you from getting jittery from all the carbohydrates.

As far as entertainment is concerned, stay away from high tech. You can watch DVDs anytime. This the time for more interactive fun. If you enjoy crafts, bring basic craft supplies (glue, scissors, construction paper, etc.) and see what you can make using things you find outside, like sticks and leaves. Bring games like checkers, and a deck of cards.

Try this too: Write down a bunch of questions on slips of paper and put them in a paper bag, great conversation-starters for two young girls, like "If you could have any boy at school for your boyfriend, who would you pick?" Between crafts and games, take turns drawing a question from the bag and answering it in the most interesting way you can think of. The other one can then try to guess if the answer is true or false.

Try to get at least a little sleep, but concentrate on enjoying your time together. Remember, you won't always live together, but you will always be sisters. You choose your friends, but God chose your sister for you. Enjoy each other now, and you will have each other for a lifetime!
