I'm taking a road trip to California tomorrow morning from Minnesota. I'll spend about a week there driving along the coast from north to south and will be bringing a tent. Anybody have any suggestions on places to stop for the day and see? Also do you know of a good place to camp that's reasonably priced or even free? Thanks!

Answer
The 17 mile drive in Monterey is famous. The iconic "Lone Cypress" is located there

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a must see. It's where they filmed Star Trek IV, the one with the whales.

Further south is Big Sur. Highway 1 has some of the most beautiful scenary in the world.

Stop along the central coast at San Simeon. Take the tour of Hearst Castle. It's remarkable.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is right on the coast.

In LA, go to the Getty Center. It's has one of the largest art collections in the world and admission is free.

In San Diego, Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster (one of two remaining seaside coasters on the west coast) as well as other rides. There is a boardwalk that runs the enitre length of both beaches. It's a great place to rent a bike or skates.

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo.

BTW you are not going to find free campsites on the coast. There are no private ocean front campsites and the rest are state parks which mostly require reservations for overnight camping. All beaches (with the exception of military bases) are public and camping on the beach is not allowed.

What will I need for a cross country road trip? How much money will I need?

I have a pretty small car(96 grand am) so I can't bring a lot of stuff, so just the essentials. I'll be leaving next summer to go from the east coast, to the west coast and back. Here's my list of what I'll be bringing so far:
Clothing(different stuff for different climates), boots, sandals, sneakers, and another pair of comfy shoes, a tent, cooking stove, first aid kit, my phone and a car charger, some towels, blankets, pillows. I'm also thinking about bringing some food along with me to help cut down costs. I was thinking about stuff like rice, quinoa, chia seeds and beans. Is there any other foods that would be good to bring? Also, what would be the best way to have water?
I've already accounted for costs of supplies, I'm just wondering how much it might cost for other things. I'll be getting AAA too probably. I looked up the gas costs and it will be about $700 to get from Pennsylvania to California and back, not including any of the stops and such I'll be making.
I'm thinking of saving about $6000, just for June, July, August and part of September. Will that be enough?
Also, I will not be staying in hotels.

Answer
I agree about buying food as you need it. Then you can enjoy lots of fresh produce and regional things. Camping is great. The scenery usually tops what you get from a motel window.
