Husband and I are looking to take a camping trip to Oregon. We want to go canoeing or hiking on the most scenic route possible. There are so many to investigate how can I plan this trip better? We want to tent camp too if possible. Any insight or helpful trip planning?

Answer
Highway 101 is a great road to take-it goes right along the coast and there are tons of little campgrounds lining it. There are great hikes all along 101 too.
Depending on when you visit, the coast can be cool and wet which is problematic for camping--June, July, August and into September are a bit warmer.

This website has some boating recreation options on it along 101: http://visittheoregoncoast.com/activities/lakes-and-reservoirs/

Hope this helps some, good luck on your trip!

Good places to go camping in oregon?

Sara

A couple friends and I, 3-4 people maximum, are planning on going camping jsut for a night next weekend. We are looking for a scenic place to have our camp. I'm not sure the rules on it or anything in state parks or trails. We don't need any amenities, we're willing to hike.

It'd be cool if there was a place to swim. We jsut need a place to park the car overnight, but if anyone has any favorites, please share!

Where are you? How far are you willing to drive? Do you want ocean, the Columbia River Gorge, water falls, forest, etc.? How much do you want to pay? Do you have 4x4? Do you care if there are neighbors? Lots of great camping in Oregon.

#1 The beach. Few people know that, in Oregon, the state owns the beach you are allowed to camp directly on it for free. All you need to do is find a pull out along the highway that doesn't have a no overnight parking sign. There are some exceptions:

Overnight camping, including overnight sleeping in tents, driftwood shelters, sleeping bags, recreational vehicles, trailers or automobiles, on the ocean shore within the city limits of Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Seaside, Newport, Bandon, Gold Beach, Rockaway Beach and Manzanita is prohibited.)

-- No camping in areas that abut state parks;
-- Not within the city limits mentioned above;
-- and not where signs are posted prohibiting camping.

"You can camp on the beach in many areas in the central and south coast (the exceptions are within most city limits and on beaches immediately seaward of a state park boundary), but beach camping is generally intended for hikers and others who are car-less. Most parking lots along the highway don't allow overnight parking, even if the vehicle is empty. So, it's generally safer to use a campground (you can rent a site and sleep in your car if you like)." - Chris from Oregon State Parks

You can camp for free in the National Forest if you are outside of a campground.
Three of Oregon's State Forests allow camping. http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/STATE_FORESTS/Recreation.shtml
This page lists free car camping sites http://freecampsites.net
There are more than 50 Oregon state parks that offer camping http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/camping.shtml
There's also BLM land
