Me and my friends are looking for places to go camping this upcoming weekend, is there any good places to go where you don't have to pay?. Also if you know any places where your able to get there by using public transit like the Metro North or something would help, thanks.

Answer
You don't want to camp in Central Park. Woke up there once, not fun.
You could go right over the GWB and start the Long Path going into NY State.
Or, you can connect from a few trains at Penn Station to get to Tuxedo, NY train station. From there you have the entire Harriman State Park where you can camp at many of their shelters for free. You can stealth camp as well (non official camping spots) almost anywhere. I've done it many times without a problem. Get the Harriman/Bear Mountain map set from www.nynjtc.com and look for the shelters. Closest to Tuxedo Train Station is The Dutch Doctor Shelter, about 4 miles away. Nice shelter, water close, lots of tent spots.

Say I have $3,000 and I want to roam around the US for a while...?

Let's say I have a small car that gets about 35 mpg on the freeway, $3,000 dollars, and a burning desire to hit the road. I would stay in hostels and eat cheap, terrible food. How long could I feasibly keep this up before running out of money?

Answer
Depending on your spending habits, you may be able to last a few months with $3000. As for hostels, another user is correct about them being mostly in major cities. So if you are out in a rural area, and looking for a place to rest for a few hours, your only options will be a hotel or sleep in your car. Unless....you take some of that $3000 b4 you start out, and buy yourself a small tent, a sleeping bag, and a small bbq grill. The money you initially spend on these items will pay for themselves many times over in they money they can save you.

So follow your heart's desire, and hit the road. :) There are state parks in every state that charge a small fee for tent camping. Lots of other campgrounds to choose from that are not state owned. Nearly all campgrounds have 'bathhouses' where you can shower. There are also some great stealth camping sites (i.e. Free) in the US. Personally, I'd rather spend a night in a tent, rather than share a hostel with several other folks, roaches, bedbugs, etc. You might decide you want to splurge every week or two and rent a cheap hotel room for a night or two to sleep in a real bed, and use the laundry facilities.

You don't have to eat cheap, terrible food either. Buy yourself one of those tiny grills, about 12-14 inch diameter grill, about one foot tall, supported by three legs. It's lightweight, packs up fairly easily, and you can easily grill darn near anything on it. You might want to keep the grill packed up in a garbage bag in your trunk to keep from getting soot and ashes on your other items or your trunk. Hit a grocery store and buy yourself something to grill...burgers, etc. Food is your choice. You might also want to invest in a small ice chest cooler to keep a few cold drinks, and to keep any meat or veggie purchases fresh for awhile.

Plan ahead, and that $3000 could last you a couple months at least. So go on, hit the road! Hope you have a great time!
