I don't do a great deal of camping in California, but I have yet to see a free campground in California, not to say there isn't one. Here is a link to a list of Southern California beach campgrounds that gives a review of the campground and further details on each of them. Hope I helped. Have fun!

What is the best campsite in Northern California?
Q. We don't have an RV or a boat, just want to go camping the old fashioned way, and perhaps do some fishing (preferably river fishing).
Answer
I was just at Three Rivers Hideaway in Three Rivers about 28 miles east of viselia on 198. Nice camp ground tight on the river and they have tent sites available nice place out of the way. My favorite places to tent camp are all up around the Redding area
Beaver Creek up in Kalamath is a free national forest service camp ground that is primitave with pit toilets. Nice place to stay near the kalamath river. closer to redding there are camp sites up and down the sacramento river including sacramento rv park, with tent sites, castle craigs state park with 3 different camp grounds close to the upper sac. Whiskeytown lake has brandy creek and oak bottom camp grounds for tent camping out near weaverville there is lewiston lake on the trinity river AWESOME trout fishing Just to name a few!
