It will be me, my husband, & 2 teenage sons, so we're not interested in attractions for little kids. Hiking, fishing, canoe rental & clean bath houses are a plus. :) We've been to Grandfather Mountain & loved it.

I highly recommend the Mortimer Campground that is in Caldwell County. It's fairly primitive but very remote with very nice campsites and a bath house. At the furthest point back in the campground there is a very cool hike that begins there and does a loop back to the middle of the campground. It's a very rugged hike and maybe 4 miles or so... I can't remember the distance but I did it a couple of years ago and had a great time.
Here is a link to a website that has that Mortimer listed on it. If you click on the map the indicator on the map is in the wrong spot so I'll tell you how to see the camping area. As you're looking at the map zoom in and you see the intersection of the Brown Mountain Beach road and Hwy 90 the (Edgemont Road). The campground is about 100 yards to the left of that intersection on Hwy 90 and not to the right as the indicator will show you. Zoom in on that area and follow the road back into the campground and you can see the campsites a little through the trees. The buildings at the very end is a bath house for sure and I think the others may be as well. http://www.explorecaldwell.com/camping.html
Here is a link to the Wilson Creek visitor center that is along the road to Mortimer. You'll find the folks there to be very helpful. They can help you with trail and camping maps of the area. There are a bunch of trails along there and Wilson Creek itself is amazing to see. Again, this is a very rugged area. The roads are mostly gravel so be prepared for that and don't let that surprise you.
Just above this very area is the Linville Gorge area and the Parkway. I've camped at the Linville Gorge camping area before and it was great. You access it along the Parkway. You'll have very near access to the trials leading out to see Linville Falls. If somewhere a little less rugged is what you have in mind you may want to check this out. there are at least three camp grounds on emerald isle. considering the town has elected to remain family oriented, this is a real good place to take your family....i have attached a website that will give you even more info:
