How to avoid bears In NH?

mariebabe

I live in NH. I am going backyard camping. I know, backyard camping isn't so dangerous, but I am going way out back, down a hill and across a river. My campsite is right next to the river. The next door neighbors have a huge piece of land with goats and horses and german shepard dogs. Im not worried about that. Just about bears and wolves. I am 16, my two friends are sleeping over. We are eating inside the house. We will just have soda and we will put all the soda away from the tent when we are sleeping. There will be no eating in the tent. Any food must be burnt before bed. My grandfather will be within like 3 minutes of the tent and has a gun. I will have a hatchet, a knife, a bow and arrow, a few big walking sticks and a fire and music. What else should I do to avoid bears? And will this be enough?
I will also have a hammer

Answer
Take NOTHING (food, soap, drinks, medicines, garbage, deodorant, etc) in the tent with you. Pitch your tent away from the campfire if you roast hotdogs, marshmallows, smores, hot chocolate etc). Keep you campsite clean - take garbage (and stuff that smells "good" to a bear) out of camp before sleeping or hang it abut 15-20 feet up away from the trunk or branches of a tree so bears can't get it (they climb great). Do not come out of the tent if you hear bears, just make a little noise and they will go away. Always leave them an easy escape and they will gladly run. They are not the grizzlies that cause so many problems out west, just black bears.

Or just take a dog with you. They will bark and scare them away.

Inexpensive tent camp sites that are dog friendly in Mass or NH?

Michael

It's our first time camping and we want to take our dog. We're staying in a big tent and are looking for a nice camp site within the state of Mass or NH. If we like it then we'll plan a 2nd trip with the kids. We do NOT want a run down facility. Kid and pet friendly is ideal. We prefer a location that offers swimming, boat/kayak rentals, fishing, hiking, mini golf, kid activities, fire pits, grills etc. Any suggestions? Thank you
