Here is a list of state parks in Oakland County. Not all of them have camping. Click on the park for more information and to make reservations. The Proud Lake campground is very nice. Also, note restrictions at various campgrounds. Mainly alcohol restrictions as Bald Mountain has a shooting range so state parks in the same 'grid' have a no alcohol policy.

We are looking for some woods and water in SouthWest Michigan where we can legally camp. We definitely don't want a packed campsite with showers and electricity. We want the full blown nature experience. Where are we allowed to camp? Does anyone know how that works? Any good websites? Any suggestions or advice? We want a place where we can park the car, hike into the deep woods and pitch our tent next to a lake or river. I don't know the laws for camping. What do I need to look for?

You may camp anywhere on state forest property as long as the property does not have a no camping sign. You must also display a Camp Registration Card PR 4134, it is available from your local DNR office. I have included a link to the DNR page that contains this information. Dave
