Best Camping in New York State?

S

Me and 2 or 3 of my friends want to go camping in the next week or so. None of us are that experienced of campers however. We'll prob just camp in a tent, but if the cabins are super cheap we're open to that. We want a couple things: some sort of bathrooms, it's dark enough to see some quality stars, and some kind of water (waterfall, lake, etc) and a beach doesn't hurt. It would also be good if it's somewhat close to where we live (Rochester,NY) like within an hour...two hours at most. We thought about Hamlin but they dont let you go out on the beach at night and we want to stargaze...So, lemme know if you know of any good places!

If you have no prior experience with tents, rent a cabin - you'll save yourselves a LOT of discomfort. Hamlin Beach is an excellent campground with cabins - you have to call ahead and reserve one - sometimes weeks ahead - and with the economy tanking like it is, even tent sites are now demanding reservations. Hamlin Beach has hot showers and flush toilets on site - which also makes your first camping experience a hell of a lot more enjoyable! Leave the primitive camping for later - you'll want to ease into that aspect of camping gradually. It does demand a lot more effort to go out in tents, sleep on the ground and cook over a campfire than you might imagine. My wife and I love it, but it's not for everybody. Many folks stick to cabins, or even invest in a pop-up camper or even a camping trailer or motor home. Choose wisely if you go for that - they're a major investment.

BTW - we're from the Syracuse area - and there're several decent campsites near you, both public and private. Ask around. We like to visit Hamlin Beach on the weekend they have their annual Civil War encampment/re-enactment. We camp primitive style, in heavy canvas tents and cook over open fires...and welcome the public to our events...we'll even put on a mock battle between the Yanks and the Rebs for ya! I portray a Union army surgeon at re-enactments...unfortuntely, you're probably a bit late to reserve a cabin at just about any campsite in New York state - but I guarantee you'd enjoy any nearby re-enactment...look up the dates on-line. Come on out - and another good place to visit would be old Fort Ontario, over in Oswego. Ya just missed the big deal there - Harborfest. Things will be a heck of a lot less hectic and crowded this weekend.
