Where is a good place to go camping- roughing it-in NH?

I am looking for a place to go camping that is really the "outdoors". I could just go to a place with camp sites but I am looking for something more like going to a mountain and pitching a tent. I don't know where they let you do that stuff. Any Ideas? Somewhere in the NH, VT, ME area.....

Im looking for good secluded camping sites in the Northeast. VT would be ideal. It has to be a tent campsite on a lake or river. Seclusion is the key. Nearby hiking would be great too.
