It's gonna be that way for any reservable water front camping in southern california. There are a few places that are close to water with in about 10 miles that are first come first served and a few first come first severed sites on some creeks and rivers. Look up the national forests we have and check the campground listings for these. A couple of my favorites are South fork on the Santa ana river and Sandy Flat on the Kern river

Beach Campgrounds are great when you can get a spot, I recommend refugio state beach, however all are booked solid through summer six months in advance. Your a little late. Go inland towards the mountains and you may find spots on a lake somewheres but even then the weekends will be booked solid six months in advance. Some popular lake campgrounds are Serrano in Big bear. Silverwood lake state park. Piru lake. Castaic and Casitas lakes. if your willing to go a bit farther north and inland a favorite of mine is Hobo campground on the Kern River its one of the few places where you can fish in the river and soak in a hotspring at the same time.
