I want to know what the furthest i could travel. What cities etc.. Are there any locks or damns that i would not be able to get through or have to pay to go through? Also, i would have to stop to fill up on gas. Are there docks to fill up along the river that i could make it to between fill ups? I have never been on a river with a jet ski, only lakes. Any tips would be appreciated!

Answer
The short answer is as far as you want to go. It's obvious that you are not an experienced cruiser, so I will tell you some places to get info. First, you can go all the way to Cairo where the Ohio empties into the Mississippi, then down to the gulf, then ? wherever.
Alternately, you can go down the Ohio to the Tennessee River at Paduca, KY, (about 50 miles short of the Mississippi)
then take the Ten-Tom waterway to the Gulf at Mobile, AL, then ? wherever.
Yes, there are locks, they are all free. Your taxes pay for it all.:)
There are all kinds of places to get fuel, food and lodging as these rivers are major cruising grounds.
That being said, a jet ski is not the most comfortable way to travel long distance, unless you have a lot of money. Most people you have done long distance cruising on jet skiis have done so just to prove it can be done, and they stay overnight at motels and eat at restraurants; expensive. If your jet ski is one of the bigger ones, maybe you could carry a small tent and some supplies and beach camp. Not be a jet skier I don't know how much storage room they have.
The Army Cores of Engineers has all the charts available for the rivers, google them for lots of info on the rivers. The charts are large scale and show the rivers mile by mile, showing you where all the locks and dams are, etc.
Quimbys Cruising Guide is the biggest guide for the rivers, giving you the locations by river mile on where to get fuel, lodging, food, etc. There may be some smaller guides specific to the Ohio River only. Google Ohio River, or check Amazon.com and search for cruising guides.
Locking through is not big deal, once you get used to feeling pretty small compared to everyone else.:)
By the way, I have cruised these rivers starting from Mpls, Mn. and just returned from three months living aboard my boat in florida.
Good luck and have fun! Any cruise, no matter how small is worthwhile and will probably wet your appitite for more. If you have any other questions you can ask me direct at otter55806@yahoo.com
