Q. I live in New Jersey and was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to go for primitive living/camping. I would like somewhere with a river or lake for a water source, but somewhat far away from civilization where I won't be bothered. Someone had brought up the Delaware Water Gap, but it seems it is too heavily regulated for my tastes. Any suggestions would be helpful and anything relatively close to or in NJ would be perfect. Thanks!

Bass River State Forest was the first forest acquired by the state of New Jersey in 1905 for public recreation, water conservation, and wildlife and timber management. Lake Absegami, a 67-acre lake created in the 1920's, is the center of the forest's recreational activities and provides an area for swimming and a serene setting for boating and canoeing. A trail through the Absegami Natural Area wanders through a pine/oak woods and a small Atlantic white cedar bog.
We are the closest full-facility campground to Victorian Cape May and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Our 175 acres of forests and fields provide an ideal camping setting amidst a scenic natural habitat. Spacious campsites accommodate every camper's needs and equipment, whether you are packing a tent or towing a 35 ft. trailer ... or anything in between.
Cedar Ridge Campground is located at the very top of New Jersey in the beautiful Kittatiny Mountains. From your campsite, you can view some of the most scenic splendor within the region. It's here, at Cedar Ridge Campground, where you and nature will become one in a quiet and peaceful setting.
