What are some affordable hotel alternatives?

I'm 16, turning 17 in March. In June or July of this year, three or four of my friends and I will be taking a road trip, possibly to Galveston Island. We live in Oklahoma and, with the exception of one, we are all juniors in high school. I'm looking for more affordable lodging arrangements because hotels these days are too damn expensive. I don't own an RV. I was thinking more along the lines of a large tent or a small cabin if they have those.
Interesting. What if I provide my own tent? Surely they can't set an age restriction on that.

you will not be allowed to partake of any of them as you are not 18. and even if one of you is 18, the others will NOT be allowed to stay without a parent or guardian present.

ETA providing your own gear is not a factor considering EVERYBODY Has to do that on camp sites. but at under 18 you CANNOT enter into a contract to rent a camp site. and many sites will only rent to people over 21.
