Q. I lent mine to a kid in my scout troop and he didn't set it up to dry when he got back. He gave it to me today, over a week later. The last time it saw sunlight was probably around Sunday in central Florida. There is a small amount of black spots on the fabric, and it smells god awful. Any suggestions from somebody with experience would be great. Thanks for answering if you do.

Answer
Set the tent up outside in sunny weather so the mildewed spots are exposed to the sun. Wash with plenty of water and a mild detergent, scrub the mildew and any soil to dislodge as much as you can.

Let it drip dry for a while, then lightly spray or daub the area with a very mild bleach solution or 1/2 and 1/2 water and vinegar mix and let dry.

The sun will do a lot of the killing and bleaching for you- but too much will break down the waterproofing- and so will the cleaners, so get some more waterproofing agent at a local camping or sporting goods store and retreat. While you are at it, reseal the seams and make any other repairs you need.

A lot of the damage to tents happen when they are stored. Do not store it in the stuff bag- instead either let it hang in a dry place or very loosely stuff it in a large pillowcase or other breathable bag and hang it someplace dry and airy.

What are some nice beach campgrounds near central Florida?

I would like to go camping this summer in a tent somewhere where there is a beach. I don't want to drive too far though. I live right in the middle of Florida, so somewhere around there.

Answer
My favorite is the Canaveral National Seashore, just south of New Smyrna. To get there, go east on SR 44 to New Smyrna. 44 will turn into A1A at the beachfront - go south on A1A until you get to the park entrance. You will need a permit to hike down past the public part of the beach, and there aren't any facilities (bring your own water, etc.), but it's a great place to go to get away from everything.
